Relax: Ensuring Your Condo Life is Enjoyable

Monday, September 8, 2014

With all of the wonderful condos for sale in the Downtown Vancouver area, it can be tempting to just sell the old homestead and downsize into a smaller and more urban condominium. However, condominium living is a lot different than the suburban life you’re used to. It can be quite a shock for some and negatively affects their condo experience. Here’s a couple of tips to ensure that you get the most out of living in your dream condominium:

  • Don’t Treat a Condo as an Apartment. Although they are similar in that they have a single building or complex for tenants to live in, condominiums have multiple and several owners while apartments usually only have one or a few. This is why condos have homeowners’ associations (HOA) to ensure that all of the owners’ interests are served. If you are the owner of your unit, then you’re responsible for repairs and upkeep of your area. If you’re just a tenant, however, you will need to contact the owner and not the HOA to raise any concerns.
  • Be always nice and polite. The close quarters of condominium life may result in friction with your neighbours—if you don’t have the right attitude. The only way to ease things is to try to be polite as much as possible. If a neighbour has a noisy dog or are too noisy, don’t confront them directly. Go through the proper process (e.g. raising the issue with the HOA) to avoid unnecessary conflict.
